It's almost machine-like in its perfect repetitiveness, but it isn't really like a machine at all. It's no wonder to me that the whip-poor-will would have associations in some people's minds with the supernatural.<br /><br />As for redundancy attracting a mate: there are lots of qualities, especially in human beings, that seem incomprehensible to me if that's the goal.
