Reading the Pulps

Here's an advertisement from Country Gentleman, February 1948. The cartoonist was Hank Ketcham (1920-2001), later of Dennis the Menace fame (or infamy, depending on what you think of Dennis the Menace). Reading is definitely good for you, and there's nothing wrong with reading horror tales. Reading horror tales at 3 o'clock in the morning might not be good for you however, especially if you have to get up at six.

  1. Even better, read Weird Tales while eating 40% Bran! Doubles the effect of the bran...

  2. Dear Howard,

Your comment makes me think of a cartoon by Tom Cheney showing a man reading a book called "Erotic Horror Stories." He has a bulge in the front and in the back. Crude but funny.

  3. A little off topic, but have you ever seen the SpongeBob SquarePants episode entitled "The Smoking Peanut?" It's on YouTube. I am referring to the part where ol' SpongeBob is being grilled by the cops. Really crude (and extremely funny to me) for a TV cartoon allegedly aimed at children... your rejoinder brought it to mind. 'Nuff said!
