Flying saucers do not come from other planets. They come from science fiction. That's why they were first seen in the 1940s, beginning on this date in 1947, and why they were hyped by a science fiction writer and editor, Raymond A. Palmer. Earth vs. the Flying Saucers came out nine years and eight days later. Based on a book by former pulp-fiction author and teller of weird tales Donald E. Keyhoe, the movie screenplay was written by Curt Siodmak, who should have been in Weird Tales. Siodmak also wrote the screenplay for I Walked with a Zombie (1943), which was produced by Val Lewton, who was in Weird Tales. Anyway, Happy Birthday to the Flying Saucers! |
